Chronic Fatigue is one of the great medical mysteries in Western Medicine today. It is estimated that there are over a million Americans dealing with it while only about 20% are actually diagnosed. The characteristics of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) also called Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) include extreme fatigue after exertion that is not helped by rest, issues with brain fog and memory, sleep problems, and pain. In fact, all of the symptoms seem to get worse after activity. It also seems to more women overall but people of all but does affect women, children, and people of all races. It is a devastating problem for those who deal with it and can really take a toll on family members as well as employers.
Scientist have been unable to discover the cause and there are not any good treatment options in the Western Medical world. However, on the Holistic side of medicine we have seen some great recovery stories and there is a lot of research being done on treatments that can be helpful for Chronic Fatigue. We have personally seen positive effects of acupuncture helping patients with symptoms and there are several studies that show that too.
Research posted in the Guangxi Medical Journal found that acupuncture was effective for the relief of fatigue, depression, and other symptoms of CFS. Their clinical trial showed that a certain kind of acupuncture has a high total effective rate and a significant total recovery rate for patients with CFS. In this study they performed Qihuan acupuncture which involved the placement of 8 acupuncture needles in a circle around the navel. Patients were treated every 3 days for a total of 10 treatments then rested a few days and started again for 10 more treatments. The results were a 95% total effective rate with a total recovery rate of 33.33%.
Researchers at Shenzhen Hospital of Chinese Medicine determined that acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for the alleviation of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Subjective documentation of symptomatic improvements and objective measurements (including IgA and IgG levels) record a 90% total effective rate and a 50% total recovery rate. This study used 8 acupuncture points known as the Eight Influential Points. This type showed a 50% cure rate and had an effectiveness rating of 90%.
